Blue Valentine is a film about the dissolving of a marriage. Both Michelle Williams and Ryan Gossling give moving realistic performances. Although nothing about the film looks like a reality television show the themes couldn't be closer to reality.

While films are moving more into 3D and blue people this small film took a step backwards towards real life. In the vain of the films of the 70's, "Blue Valentine" shows the darkness in our everyday lives.

Ryan Gossling will break your heart. He continues to prove his acting chops and his ability in film choice. This is a film that shows him doing his best, pulling your heart strings and drawing you into his world even as he spins out of his. I found Michelle Williams equally convincing. Her portrayal of a woman who has lost her ability to love her husband is honest and convincing.

IF your looking for a film to pick you up this is not the door to knock on. As the lights lifted from the small Brooklyn theater I was in I saw an audience full of quiet couples. I noticed reassuring glances that said we're not like that but the film definitely left an air of doubt in the air. The reality is marriage is hard and this film can be hard to sit through but it's nice to watch a film that is honest and true and represents the reality that we live in. See this film on a rainy day and get a good cry in.
